SUV e-bikes were new to me until a couple of weeks before writing this. I lost track ages ago, somewhere between Hybrid and Crossover. Despite the long-standing negative connotations with SUV cars (at least in the UK), it turns out an SUV e-bike is my sort of machine: a travel bike, just like the original MTBs in the mid-1980s. SUV is a bit of the niche in the UK and looks like it’ll stay that way, but I realised the Sinch Force 4 EQ I rode on Alps 2 Ocean in NZ (below) fitted this category too: full-sus e-MTB meets fully equipped ute-commuter right down to the bell.

Below is my list of desirable SUV or travel e-bike attributes:

  • Big capacity battery (650Wh +)
  • MTB-like low range gearing and tyres
  • Dropper seatpost
  • Four piston brakes
  • Motor at least 70Nm
  • Full suspension, but less travel than a DH MTB
  • Fast charger
  • Rear rack
  • Wired-in lights
  • Kickstand
  • Fitted mudguards
  • All-day saddle
  • Bell. Ding!

Only a few e-SUVs have all of the above – full-sus is usually last on the list. All that equipment adds up to all-terrain travel utility (as long as it’s not too rough) but also more weight, so don’t expect to be bouncing off the berms at the local trail park or liofting it over locked gates. Mudguards keep the crap off the battery and motor, as well as the rider, and despite previous experience, my Tero’s fenders are holding up. The kickstand makes regular gates less of a chore and the rack, low-gearing and the dropper are also all essentials.

SUVs also get described as ‘travel’ or ‘adventure’ e-bikes which is even more in my ball park, having the potential range, load-carrying and all-terrain comfort to cover a full day’s hilly off-road to the next recharge, or maybe even a wild camping over-nighter where the terrain, distance and battery allow. A fast wall-plug recharger means you can viably top up over a long cafe lunch. Just make sure you order something before plugging in.

Read this forensic 2025 review of ten SUV e-bikes which lays it all on the line. I read it, and after going Full Rabbit Hole for a couple of days, came up for air and bought my Tero X5. More about that here.

In 2026 the associated app-only e-mountainbike magazine did it all again.
